Southern Nebraska Rural Public Power District serves Doniphan with retail electric service. Doniphan's electrical distribution system is served by a 2,500 kVA 34.5-12.47/7.2kV substation transformer. The 34,500 volt line feeding Doniphan can be fed from two alternate sources--one from a 115 kV substation located two miles east of Doniphan and the other from a 115 kV substation located at Alda, Nebraska. These substations are both connected to the Nebraska Public Power District's 115 kV statewide grid system. Natural gas is supplied to the community of Doniphan by KN Energy, Inc., through a two-inch transmission pipeline with an operation pressure of approximately 600-700 pounds per square inch. KN Energy is also the distributor of natural gas within the community, serving approximately 275 residential, commerical, and industrial customers. The municipal water system in Doniphan is supplied by three wells, which have an average depth of 215 feet. The system has a combined pumping capacity of 1,200 gallons per minute and an overhead storage capacity of 250,000 gallons. The average daily demand is 400,000 gallons, and the historic peak daily demand is 1,000,000 gallons. The system has a maximum capacity of 1,978,000 gallons per day. Groundwater is available for industrial uses outisde the city limits. The quality of water in Doniphan does not require a water treament plant. The water table has not changed significantly during the past five years.
Doniphan has a municipal sanitary sewerage system and a storm sewer system. The lagoon type treatment plant was built in 1977 designed to handle a population of 800. The plant has a daily capacity of 250,000 gallons. The average daily flow is 130,000 gallons and the historic peak daily discharge is 200,000 gallons.
A private hauler has an exculsive collection franchise agreement with the village of Doniphan. Wastes are taken to a disposal site owned by the Grand Island Area Solid Waste Agency.
Telecommunication services for the Doniphan area are provided by Hamilton Telephone Company, (402) 694-5101 or (800) 821-1831, Aurora, Nebraska. The digital central office is served by fiber (in a ring configuration for added protection). The closest point of presence is approximately 11 miles north of Doniphan. Hamilton Telephone can provide access to an alternate point of presence by completely separate routing as well.
