HISTORY

In 1879, W. J. Burger platted a town site, sold a number of lots, and started the town named Doniphan. The town was named in honor of Colonel John Doniphan, an attorney for the St. Joseph and Grand Island Railroad.

LOCATION

Situated in Hall County, Doniphan is located two miles south of the Platte River. Doniphan is served by U.S. Highway 281 and is three miles south of Interstate 80. Doniphan is 11 miles south of Grand Island, Nebraska (population 39,386); 12 miles north of Hastings, Nebraska (population 22,837); 150 miles west of Omaha, Nebraska; 415 miles east of Denver, Colorado; and 91 short miles west of Big Red Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska.

LOCAL ECONOMY

Basic economic activities in the Doniphan area include irrigated and dry land farming, cattle and hog feeding, manufacturing, trucking, tourism, and retail sales.

COMMUNICATIONS

First class postal service; one local newspaper and three other newspapers delivered locally; four area television stations and sixteen area radio stations; one cable TV system; and eight package delivery services available.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT

County Government - Hall County has 14 townships and is governed by a 7-member Board of Supervisors who are elected by popular vote for four-year terms. Hall County belongs to the Hall County Regional Planning Commission which governs locally.

Municipal Government - The Village of Doniphan is governed by a 5-member Board of Trustees who are elected at large for four-year office terms.

Fire Department & Quick Response Team - Doniphan has a fire and QRT unit consisting of 30 volunteers. Doniphan is proud of the men and women who donate their time and training to service on the Volunteer Fire Department and QRT.

Law Enforcement - The village of Doniphan contracts with the Hall County Sherriff's Department to provide law enforcement in the community. Troop C of the Nebraska State Patrol, headquartered in Grand Island, works in conjunction with the Hall County Sherriff's Department to provide services in Doniphan.
